The Passion of Our Lord

The 24 Hours of the Passion Of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Experience Each Hour of Our Lord's Passion

by Luisa Piccarreta
Little Daughter of the Divine Will

Luisa Piccarreta "The Little Daughter of the Divine Will"

"…The satisfaction that blessed Jesus receives from the meditation of these Hours is so great, that He would want at least one copy of these meditations to be present and practiced in each city or town. In fact, it would happen, then, as if Jesus heard His own voice and His prayers being reproduced in those reparations, just as the ones He raised to His Father during the 24 hours of His sorrowful Passion. And if this were done in each town or city at least, by as many souls, Jesus seems to make me understand that Divine Justice would be placated in part, and in these sad times of torments and bloodshed, Its scourges would be stopped, in part, and as though dampened. I let you, reverend Father, make an appeal to all; may you complete, in this way, the little work that my lovable Jesus had me do…"

(from a letter of Luisa to her extraordinary Confessor, Blessed Annibale M. di Francia)

FASTING and PRAYER

"The best fast is on bread and water. Through fasting and prayer, one can stop wars, one can suspend the natural laws of nature. Works of charity cannot replace fasting... Everyone except the sick has to fast." (July 21, 1982)

 Why Fasting?

Fasting has been around for centuries and is found in both the Old and New Testament.  Jesus fasted often and is recommended in times of great temptation or severe trials.  Well known as an acceptable sacrifice to offer God.  In Mt 9:14-15, Christ wanted his disciples to fast and pray and gave us clear instructions for how they should do so (Mt 6:16-18). Today, Catholics follow this pattern of fasting and abstinence from certain foods as stated in Daniel 10:2-3.

In recent Marian apparitions in Medjugorje, Mary has asked us to fast on bread and water on Wednesdays and Fridays (preferably from Wednesday midnight to Friday midnight).  The amounts of bread and water are not specified; however, it is known to be a sacrifice or offering to God.

If this is not possible due to sickness or some other reason, then Our Lady asks that we at least give up something to make a sacrifice to God.

So why should we fast?  Jesus tells us in Mark 9:29 that certain devils, "can be cast out in no other way except by prayer and fasting".  We have to realize the power of fasting.  In recent messages from Our Lady, she tells us "You have forgotten that with prayer and fasting you can ward off wars, suspend natural laws."

By combining prayer with fasting we increase the power and efficacy of our prayers.  This is especially important to remember when praying for a special or urgent intention. By prayer and fasting we allow our whole being to participate, and offer this sacrifice to God. We should also fast because we love God and want to be soldiers that offer our bodies in the battle against evil.

The Rosary

 Why the Rosary?

The word rosary comes from the Latin word meaning a "garland of roses." or "Crown of Roses." The reason for roses is because roses are often related to the Blessed Virgin Mary and are known to be one of her favorite flowers.

The rosary is a form of prayer, specifically a type of devotional prayer, in which prayers are recited using a set number of beads. The most common form of the rosary is composed of five sets of ten beads, called decades, plus a single larger bead before and after each decade. Each decade is separated by a smaller bead, with the entire thing hanging from a crucifix or medal.

There are many different ways to pray the rosary, but the most common is the Dominican way. In this method, each mystery is announced, then one Hail Mary is said for each of the 10 beads that follow; while meditating on that mystery.

After all five decades are complete, one would pray the concluding prayer, "Hail Holy Queen."

For more information about the Rosary and its history, some additional reading may be found at PRAY THE ROSARY

While through the course of time, the rosary had fallen somewhat out of favor, often trivialized, recently, due to the many apparitions of the Virgin Mary, the Rosary is now being revitalized. People are beginning to recognize the Rosary's spiritual power in fighting evil throughout the world.

Today, both Catholics and many Protestants alike are now saying the rosary, recognizing it as a truly biblical form of prayer. Folks realize that the rosary is simply comprised of prayerful meditations on the mysteries of the Bible, including the Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorius, and Luminous mysteries.

Simply said, the Rosary is a combination of both vocal and meditative prayers.  When one refers to the Rosary, it is usually understood to mean five decades, which is only one-fourth of the entire Rosary. While many Catholics pray five decades of the Rosary each day, a growing number of people pray fifteen or even twenty decades a day.

7 Reasons Why Fasting is Important

16And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that others may see their fasting. Truly, I say to you; they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”  Matthew 6:16-18

Seven Reasons Why Fasting is Important

As stated earlier, fasting is a practice that has been around since biblical times. In the Old Testament, we see examples of people fasting for 40 days (Moses on Mount Sinai), 27 days (Elijah), and even 14 days (Esther).

We see Jesus Himself fasting for 40 days in the desert in the New Testament. And after His resurrection, we see the disciples practicing regular fasts as well.
So, if you're wondering why fasting is such an important part of our faith, here are a few reasons:

1. Fasting helps us to grow closer to God. When we take away the distractions of food and other worldly pleasures, we can focus more on our relationship with God. We can spend time reading His Word, praying, and listening for His voice.

2. Fasting allows us to focus on the things that really matter. When we fast, we are reminded of our need for God and our dependence on Him. We realize that we can't do everything on our own and that He is the source of all good things in our lives.

3. Fasting is a way to show God our commitment to Him. When we deny ourselves food or other pleasures, we are saying to God that we are willing to put Him first in our lives. We show Him that we are ready and willing to do whatever He asks of us.

4. Fasting helps us to overcome temptation and grow in self-control. When we fast, we learn self-control and discipline. We train our bodies and minds to resist temptation and focus on God.

5. Fasting is a way to humble ourselves before God. When we go without food or other things we enjoy, we are reminded of our need for God. We realize that we are not in control and that He is the true source of life. This humility pleases God and brings us closer to Him.

6. Fasting can heal our bodies and minds. When we fast, we give our bodies a rest from processing food. This allows our digestive system to work more efficiently and can even help to detoxify our bodies. Additionally, fasting has been shown to improve mental clarity and focus.

7. Finally, fasting is a way to share in the sufferings of Christ. When we deny ourselves food or other things, we are reminded of the suffering that Jesus went through for us on the cross. We are united with Him in His sufferings, and we remember that He is always with us.
