A Catholic Call to Discernment in Turbulent Times

? A Nation Shaken by Misplaced Priorities

Democratic mayors and governors are claiming their cities are safe while thousands of residents continued to be shot and killed and destructive riots and crime continue to grow at an alarming rate.

?Woe to those who call evil good and good evil,

who put darkness for light and light for darkness.?

? Isaiah 5:20

We see it all around us?people have begun to make the ?creature? St. Paul warned about into their god, placing their faith in government to provide direction, food, housing, and medicine. In doing so, they?ve replaced trust in the Creator with dependence on creation, leading to growing moral confusion, corruption, and compromise.

?They exchanged the truth about God for a lie

and worshiped the creature rather than the Creator.?

? Romans 1:18?32

Yet again it is foretold:

?The Spirit says that in later times some will turn away from the faith, following deceiving spirits and teachings of demons.?

? 1 Timothy 4:1-4

?People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money?

holding to the outward form of religion but denying its power.?

? 2 Timothy 3:1-7

From a Catholic vantage, these prophetic words echo the Catechism?s reminder that

?The dignity of the human person is rooted in his creation in the image and likeness of God.? ? CCC 1700

Yet, in our public square, that dignity is eroded by policies and words that prioritize ideology over the common good, autonomy over communion, and power over service.

The chasm between good and evil grows stark.

As faithful Catholics, we must name these shadows not out of partisanship but out of fidelity to Christ?s Gospel, which demands justice, mercy, and truth.

?? Rhetoric: Twisting Truth into Lies

In the marketplace of ideas, words are now used as weapons ? and Democratic rhetoric on foundational moral issues often inverts the natural law inscribed by God on the human heart. Hidden behind deceptive words and titles, the public is misguided and led into corrupt and immoral thinking.

Consider the unyielding defense of abortion as a ?right,? framed as reproductive justice.

This echoes Isaiah?s woe ? calling for the taking of innocent life good while decrying protections for the unborn as evil.

Pope St. John Paul II warned in Evangelium Vitae that such inversion ?threatens the very fabric of society,? fostering a culture of death that devalues the vulnerable.

On gender ideology, rhetoric celebrates ?gender-affirming care? for minors as compassionate progress, even as evidence mounts against irreversible interventions.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops urges us to

?resist ideologies that attempt to uproot us from our God-given identity.? ? USCCB Pastoral Note 2023

This moral sleight-of-hand isn?t abstract; it erodes trust and sows division.

As the chasm widens, Catholics are called to prophetic witness ? speaking truth in charity without descending into vitriol.

?? Governance: Prioritizing Politics Over People

The Gospel?s call to love our neighbor finds no clearer test than in governance ? yet recent Democratic maneuvers reveal a troubling detachment from this imperative.

As of October 25, 2025, the federal shutdown enters its fourth week, stemming from partisan gridlock.

This standoff furloughs thousands and leaves essential services in limbo, contradicting Catholic social teaching on the preferential option for the poor (CCC 2448).

Most egregiously, on October 23, Senate Democrats blocked bipartisan legislation to ensure paychecks for federal employees, including military and essential workers. This is a travesty of justice and moral ethics.

Where is the solidarity here?

St. Thomas Aquinas taught that just governance serves the common good, not ideological purity. ? Summa Theologica II-II q. 66

This vote weaponizes human suffering, widening the rift between professed compassion and concrete action.

In this chaos, we glimpse 2 Timothy?s lovers of self over substance ? policies that hold the ?outward form? of progress but deny the power of mercy.

The Seduction of Socialism

The Democratic Party?s overt embrace of socialism and Marxist ideologies in 2025 elevates the state to divine status while ensnaring citizens in its dependency.

Demands to expand government control ? under banners of healthcare, equality, or aid ? foster dependence, not dignity; tyranny disguised as benevolence, where the state supplants God as provider.

Pope Leo XIII in Rerum Novarum condemned socialism for violating private property and subsidiarity (CCC 1883).

Pope Pius XI in Quadragesimo Anno called it ?intrinsically wrong,? rooted in materialism and atheism.

The divide could not be greater: freedom to flourish as God intends, versus tyranny that blinds souls to evil.

This is a wake-up call: reject the idol of the state, for worshiping creation over Creator leads to ruin.

?? A Beacon of Hope: Ordered Liberty

Yet amid this storm, leadership that honors human dignity still stands.

Policies that restore economic vitality and moral clarity demonstrate that subsidiarity works ? empowering families, fostering self-reliance, and respecting the dignity of work (CCC 2427).

Such renewal reflects the Catholic vision of freedom rightly ordered ? liberty rooted in virtue and responsibility before God.

In contrast, disorder breeds dependency and decay.

True freedom is God?s gift, not government?s chain.

?? Chaotic Cities: Fruits of Disordered Rule

From San Francisco to Chicago, liberal governance has presided over spikes in homelessness, addiction, and violent crime all the while democratic leaders deny the problem, doing their best to hoodwink the American people into believing this doesn't exists.

These are symptoms of ?defund-the-police? legacies and policies that prize rhetoric over reality.

The principle of subsidiarity ? empowering local communities for the common good (CCC 1911) ? is inverted here.

Open-air drug markets and theft epidemics leave the poor most vulnerable, contradicting Christ?s mandate to protect the least (Mt 25:40).

As Pope Benedict XVI noted in Deus Caritas Est, true justice builds ordered societies where the weak are shielded.

In these urban shadows, the chasm yawns: evil roams unchecked, while leaders tout ?progress? amid the rubble.

?? God?s Victory Is Certain

?The battle belongs to the Lord.?

Even as darkness rises, we are not a people without hope.

For God still reigns. No act of man, no corruption, no evil can overthrow His plan.

Truth will stand. God's Divine Mercy is before you and if unaccepted?God's Justice will prevail.

God?s light will pierce the shadows that cover this land.

As Catholics, our response and duty is clear: prayer, fasting/penance, and bold evangelization. "Jesus, I Trust in You."

Let us also invoke the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the unborn and of the Americas, along with St. Michael the Archangel, defender against evil.

St. Catherine stated, ?You?ve had enough. Why do you not turn to Him who can give you what you need?? Jesus, our creator, is here if you Trust in His Divine Guidance and Mercy. Prayer, Fasting, and Evangelization is the key. It is our calling as Christians. Pick up the shield of faith, put on your armor of Christ Jesus, and pray the rosary, our sword and weapon against evil.

? Lord, awaken hearts, renew our nation, and lead us once again in Your truth and mercy. Remove the vale of evil that covers the eyes of our citizens. Evil may roar for a season, but victory belongs to Christ ? now and forever.
